Here's what has been happening in the Music Room over the last few weeks....
5th Grade has been exploring how to take rhythms and put them on a music staff to create their own music. They have the opportunity to make changes how they choose to create something that they like. Just recently they were challenged to play a short melody piece that was on the board. Their determination was rewarding!
4th Grade started a unit called Mallet Madness. We are learning to rotate to different instruments and play as a group. Ask them about their rotation poem and see if they can recite it! The students seemed to enjoy using the various instruments because of the different sounds made throughout the room.
3rd Grade has been using the xylophones and glockenspiels! Ask them what the difference is between these two instruments. They have explored playing the C scale (playing from low C to high C), playing notes that were provided and guessing the song, as well as recalling the song a week later and having to use their listening skills for what the song should sound like. It was so awesome to see and hear their discoveries!
2nd Grade has been reviewing rhythm pieces and identifying their names (quarter note, quarter rest, whole note, half note, pair of eighth notes). They are currently exploring Note Knacks which includes colorful wooden pieces that can be sorted in separate groups, put together to complete rhythms and also gives the opportunity to see how math/fractions are related to music!
1st Grade has been reviewing musical opposites (high/low, fast/slow, up/down, loud/quiet). We have used instruments such as the colorful Boomwhackers to learn how music goes up and down. We have identified that a low voice is like a dad or grandpa and a high voice is like a baby.
Kindergarten has been exploring musical opposites with scarves, instruments, and dots (that we even danced with!). We've also started a Farm Unit. Each week we learn about an animal, use classroom instruments for their sound and play a game or do an activity that correlates with the animal.
Pre-K has been learning about sound and silence in music. These kids love to dance, sing and move! We have been exploring the difference between one beat and two beats. We have used popsicle sticks, rhythm sticks and even each other to create simple rhythms.
KIndergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade will also be learning about Musical Explorers. This is a unit that introduces the students to three different artists that play music from different styles. We will attend a concert in December as well as one in the Spring.
