October came and went before I got this blog done. So...on to November!
Pre-K has enjoyed acting out well-known stories and using instruments for sound effects. We love to dance, sing, and move about the music classroom. We've explored emotion in music as well as story telling. The students love to play instruments and use the words, steady beat.
Kindergarten has been very busy! They are learning about various artists that will be visiting at the Lucas Theater in December. We've also been trying to get started on some holiday music for an even in December. That's quite a load for these little ones but we're moving right along.
1st Grade and 2nd Grade are preparing for their field trip to the Lucas Theater in December. We have been learning about the various artists and their instruments. We have working on a Word Wall, making sure to include all music vocabulary that will help us differentiate between the artists.
3rd Grade has been learning about the Music Staff. They have been learning how to identify the notes on the music staff so that music can be played and identified. I love watching them get all excited when they discover the right answer for the first time! They love playing the xylophones and this activity is a great way to prepare them for more difficult playing opportunities.
4th Grade has continued with the Mallet Madness curriculum. We use various instruments that make up Mallet Madness. We learn to play rhythms in various forms such as Hopscotch mode, patterns, sound/silence, etc. The students have been learning how to play simple melodies to accompany a game activity.
5th Grade has started working on Instrument Research and Presentation. They researched World Music, Folk Music and Orchestra Music, using a KWL chart. K: What I know about the subject, W: What I want to know about the subject and L: What I learned about the subject. Then they chose an instrument to research. The culminating activity will include a presentation to the class. They will use a poster, power point or other means to present their information.
