The year has started off very cold indeed!!
I hope your winter break was filled with lots of fun, good memories and rest!
Here's what is happening in our classes:
5th Grade has started a unit called Kid Stix. We will explore using various items to play rhythms that will accompany music. Students love banging on the different items (tambourine, metal can, small cutting board, rhythm/drum sticks)! We are making progress as we work to play together.
4th Grade is putting together rhythm booklets to be used for assessment opportunities. Students will be able to work through rhythm exercises and advance to individual compositions.
3rd Grade has been listening to musical pieces and then using props and/or percussion instruments to accompany the music. Just recently we listened and played along to "William Tell Overture". We have discovered that when we all work together, the activity runs more smoothly and we look and sound pretty cool!
2nd Grade finished The Nutcracker movie prior to winter break. We are now using the music from The Nutcracker to use props that accompany the music. In the recent activity we used paper plates as we listened to the "March" piece. We followed a listening map so that we knew when to play and how each section had their own part.
1st Grade finished The Nutcracker movie as well. Our recent activity involved a parachute and the music of the "March". We moved according to the music we heard by marching, galloping and then switching places with a friend based on the color called out by the teacher.
Kindergarten has been exploring music for the winter season. Just recently we "ice-skated" on waxed paper to "The Skater's Waltz" by Emile Waldteufel. We are working to complete our listening glyph based on the tempo, dynamics, and other observations.
Pre-K has been exploring music, movement and creativity! Gotta keep these kiddos moving! We learn and sing about the seasons. We pretend a lot! Just recently we got a train ticket, boarded a train and took a ride around the room, going up a hill, down a hill, around curves, and then back to the station! We love to act out stories, play instruments and learn to play games together.
